Malta: Plastics in the Oceans

Seen by Wolfgang Trettnak shortly after the end of the conference OUR OCEAN 2017 in October 2017 in Malta!

The photos were taken in Valletta (Marsamxett Harbour), where  plenty of plastics were floating in the water at a ferry landing point, and on Għajn Tuffieħa beach, where surprisingly high amounts of microplastics could be seen both on the beach and floating in the water.

New Zealand

Authors: Fred Bily & Guillermo Fernandez; Date: November 2016

The photos show that even in New Zealand, far off from from the rest of the world in the Pacific Ocean, plastics can be found on the beaches.

The photos were taken on the following beaches: Oakura Beach (New Plymouth), Koekohe Beach (Moeraki Boulders, Otago Coast), Sandfly Bay (Otago Peninsula) and Riverton (Southland)

Thanks to Fred & Guillermo!

The photos show typical plastic debris, which can be found on the beach: plastic film, containers, cups, nets, a knife, ropes, lines, styrofoam and many fragments of unidentified origin. Some of the materials are typical consumer products, others are used e.g. in fishing and related activities.

Thank you Cian!
